Many would agree that there is no such thing as the perfect cup of tea. Everyone enjoys it differently, and there are many ways to prepare it.  Take chai tea as an example. Some prefer the traditional route and preparing it from scratch. Others enjoy the convenience of ready-made mixes, and there is nothing wrong with either approach.

Brewing tea is a sensory and mindful experience. But sometimes, you don’t have the time for the full tea ritual. Plus, preparing this spiced tea is a process that leaves plenty of room for mistakes that can affect the final taste and texture. In this case, convenience matters just as much as the flavour of a well-brewed cup.

Instant chai is certainly the more feasible option for those on a busy schedule. Thankfully, there are plenty of convenient chai tea mixes that capture the essence of this brew without the simmering and spice grinding.

All you have to do is mix them with milk or water and enjoy the warmth and comfort of chai from scratch. If you taste your instant tea and don’t think it’s strong enough, you can add another scoop of mix (or less water/milk) to intensify the flavour until it suits your preference.

Modern Flavour Variations

As the world evolves, so does chai. Modern, pre-made chai mixes go beyond the traditional spiced flavour, offering new and creative taste variations. From vanilla and lavender to matcha and rose, these alternative flavours embrace convenience with a modern twist. You can pick a classic one for a reliable staple, then add other flavours for variety.

Packaging and Convenience

Aside from flavour, chai tea powders also come in various packaging styles. Most of these pre-made blends come in resealable pouches for convenience and freshness, but they can also be found in single-serve sachets for quick, portioned use, tins and jars for easy storage and reuse.

These different formats make preparing and storing even more convenient. You can choose what best fits your routine, whether it’s a one-cup option or a larger pack for everyday use at home.

Things to Watch For

On the downside, instant teas tend to have far more additives, fillers, and other preservatives than brewed tea. So, if you follow an additive-free and whole food diet, you’ll need to take extra care when choosing an instant tea blend.

The good thing is that some instant teas out there have little to no extra ingredients. When buying one, always check the ingredient list. Labels like “unsweetened”, “natural spices”, and “clean blend” can also be a good sign that the mix is closer to a simple and more natural-style tea with fewer added ingredients. Opt for simpler blends that contain tea spices, minimal or no added sugar, flavours, and fillers.

Brewing Your Own

If you’re okay with taking a bit of time for your chai tea to brew properly, go for the traditional method of preparing it. Brewing this spiced tea takes around 10 to 15 minutes. 

The first step is having the right ingredients. The base of chai is black tea, with a few exceptions (green tea and herbal bases may also be used). Black tea is the most common choice because of its strong, bold character that holds up well against spices and milk.

Next, chai almost always includes milk. Whole cow milk is the best way to bring out the richness of all the spices and create a smooth, creamy texture that balances the tea’s strength. However, it can also be made with plant-based alternatives such as oat, almond, or soy milk, depending on preference.

What sets masala chai apart from conventional tea is the specific blend of aromatic and warming spices. Chai can include many different spices. Cardamom is the most common one, followed by cinnamon, ginger, star anise, and cloves. Pepper, coriander, nutmeg, and fennel are also used, but they are slightly less common.

Sweetener is the final key ingredient. Plain white sugar is the most common sweetener for chai, as it blends easily and enhances the spice profile without overpowering it. Jaggery, or unrefined cane sugar, is also used due to its concentrated, caramel-like sweetness, which adds a deeper flavour note to the drink.

In a saucepan, combine water with the spices and bring it to a gentle boil, allowing the flavours to infuse for a few minutes. Add the black tea leaves and simmer briefly until the liquid becomes strong and fragrant.

Next, pour in the milk and let the mixture heat slowly, stirring occasionally to combine everything evenly. Finally, add the sweetener and adjust to your taste. Let it simmer for a short time before straining into a cup or serving vessel. Enjoy it while it’s still warm.

Which Option Is Better?

There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to instant chai tea mixes or brewing your own. If convenience and consistency matter most, instant chai is hard to beat.

If you enjoy the ritual, creativity, and control of building flavour from scratch, traditional brewing offers a deeply satisfying experience.

The beauty of chai tea is that it adapts to your lifestyle. Whether you’re stirring together a quick instant blend before work or slowly simmering spices on a quiet afternoon, the result is the same — a comforting cup full of warmth, character, and flavour.
