Gone are the days when we could leave the front door of our homes open to let fresh air inside. Today, an open door is an invitation for intruders to come in and help themselves to all our things. This explains why more and more Australians are investing in security doors to protect their family and possessions from forced entries and burglaries.
Installing a security door to your home is an excellent way to increase your protection without having to give up light and fresh air coming to your home. The wire mesh design of security doors allows for improved ventilation while still being strong and sturdy enough to make intrusion attempts very difficult.
But what type of door to buy? There’s a myriad of brands, designs, materials, and colours available, so it is important to understand the different aspects that go into making a good security door.
Security Standard
Unfortunately, some products labeled in the market as security doors may only secure you against flies. The term ‘security door’ is only valid when the product meets the Australian Standard AS5039-2008. A standard for installation also applies (AS5040). In the light of this fact, it is very important to ask the installation company for a written guarantee that their work complies with the established standard.
Infill
The infill can be made from aluminum grille, structural grade aluminum perforated sheet, or stainless steel mesh.
Stainless steel mesh security doors are fabricated with aluminum or steel frames that are in-filled with woven stainless steel mesh. They provide uncompromising strength without using rods or metal bars. Moreover, mesh security doors are resistant to the harsh conditions of the Australian climate, which make them a common option of security doors.
Aluminum grilles are an updated version of fly screens. Heavy-duty models may offer a better security.
Structural grade aluminum perforated sheets are new to the market and they look similar to stainless steel mesh secure doors. They are a more affordable option but aren’t as secure as stainless steel mesh.
Frame
There are two types of frames available: steel and aluminum. According to experts, steel frames are the most effective and they are also protected against corrosion. To ensure that the edge can’t be pushed out of the frame easily, the frame should come with a profound receiver channel for the grille and the connection between it and the main part of the frame must be sturdy. The corners should also be reinforced.
Grilles
Grilles that are welded to the frame tend to be more reliable and doors that use screw clamps secure the mesh in place better than those that use plastic. On many secure door models, the grille is riveted to the frame. Check the door to ensure it doesn’t have aluminum rivets in access points and choose rivets that are clinched at the back of the frame and that aren’t too far apart (one at every 25cm).
Hinges
The door should come with a minimum of three hinges with fixed hinge pins. For extra protection, look for a steel pin that is welded into the hinge leaf instead than just pressed into it. And remember, the bigger the pin, the better.
Locks
The best key locks are five-pin cylinder or equivalent. A three-point lock may prevent the top or bottom of the door being wrenched back by an intruder and wafer locks are the most vulnerable of all.
Choosing the right type of security door for your home will depend on how much protection you are after and the look you want for your home. If you live in a neighborhood where break-ins are common, you might want to consider a mesh security door. But if you just want the look of security and keep the bugs out, a sturdy aluminum door will do the work.
