Let’s face it, we all want flawless skin – no acne, blemishes, dark spots and scars. It seems as if having perfect skin is the new social norm. But a glowing face isn’t one-size-fits-all. So, if you want to wave your monstrous skin goodbye, aside from changing your lifestyle habits, it’s crucial to find the routine that works for you. And what’s more important is the quality of the acne products you use. Hence, it’s best to go organic.
However, even with the use of organic products suitable for your skin type, acne can still be pretty stubborn. So, why not turn to nature and reap the benefits of essential oils? They’re not just used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and stress relief but are also known to promote healthy, glowing skin and treat different skincare concerns.
Essential Oils for Acne
Frankincense
Wondering what does Frankincense oil do for the skin? Originating from the Middle East, Frankincense essential oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It’s ideal for alleviating irritated skin with its cooling properties and fighting bacteria growth. Dry skin is quite vulnerable to getting irritated and flaring up into a full-on cluster of pimples.
Out of the wide range of effective acne products, Frankincense essential oil is the one that’s known for being gentle on virtually every skin type, relieving dry and sensitive skin, and also healing scars that are caused by popped pimples. Aside from helping treat scarring, this essential oil also improves tissue remodelling, helps treat burns, wrinkles, age spots, and stretch marks. For this reason, Frankincense is used as an ingredient in many skin care products.
Rosemary
Rosemary essential oil can be used as a natural acne treatment as it acts as a refreshing astringent that balances and tones the skin. When topically applied on the skin, it helps decongest acne and oily skin while maintaining the proper skin balance. Plus, it has antimicrobial benefits as it prevents breakouts in oily and acne-prone skin.
Additionally, Rosemary oil provides ageing skin with an invigorating stimulation that increases circulation, thus providing your skin with a youthful and radiant glow. This oil is also good at managing sebum production, which helps keep acne at bay. It is also beneficial for other skin conditions, such as inflamed skin and eczema. Rosemary oil is also extensively used in skincare products, such as acne treatments and oily cleansers.
Lavender
Known for its ability to reduce anxiety, relax muscles, improve mood, and enhance sleep, Lavender oil is one of the most commonly used essential oils. It also has antibacterial properties which make it suitable for treating acne breakouts. Acne is often associated with stress, so reducing tension can also minimise breakouts.
It contains linalyl acetate that reduces inflammation, treats rashes, and stabilizes the natural oil level of the skin. Lavender oil contains linalool which calms upset skin and deters bacteria growth through its anti-inflammatory properties. Lavender oil is also known to regulate blood circulation underneath the skin, thus promoting oxygen and nutrients within skin cells. This, in turn, can minimise the appearance of acne scars.
How Do You Apply Essential Oils to Your Face?
Even though essential oils for acne might be all-natural, you still run the risk of an allergic reaction if you apply them undiluted directly onto your face. It’s recommended to dilute them with a carrier oil before applying them, either with coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, or other. You can apply them in different ways. For instance, you can dilute your chosen essential oil for acne with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and add the blend to a cotton swab to use it as a spot treatment. You can also make a face serum, mix for face wash, mix for acne scar treatment, etc. (with some of the following recipes) and apply them to your face.
