Test Equipment: Ensure Your Electrical Equipment is in Proper Working Condition

June 29, 2016

Electronic test equipment is used to create signals and capture responses from electrical devices that are undergoing the test. By doing so, the device being tested will show whether it’s properly working or is faulty. The use of this equipment is crucial for any serious work related to electrical systems. There are many types of electrical test equipment and each one is used to detect different problems in different devices.

One type of electrical test tool is the Oscilloscope. It is used to observe constantly changing signal voltages as two-dimensional plots of one or more signals. Sound or vibration can also be converted to voltages and displayed. The observed waveform can be analyzed for properties as frequency, altitude, rise time, distortion and others.

Another type of test tool is the thermal imaging camera. It was developed in military but later it found application into other fields and has many more uses. Firefighters use it to see through smoke and locate hotspots of fire and locate people. In law enforcement it’s used for surveillance activities. Power line technicians use it to locate overheating parts and joints to prevent failures. With it, construction technicians can locate heat leaks and improve efficiency of heating and cooling. This tool can also find use in monitoring the temperature in humans and other warm blooded animals. They basically let us see the infrared spectrum of electromagnetic which is not visible to the human eye.

There is also test equipment that can be used to locate leaks in air conditioning systems and refrigerators. This piece of test equipment is usually hand-held and can be used in any application where accurate and quick leaks need to be detected. They contain a built in air sucking system which draws a small air sample and analyzes the content to give high levels of accuracy. It’s coupled with a microprocessor control and a built-in digital signal processor which eliminates false readings. The person testing will be alerted via a multi colour visual display and a multi intensity audible alarm for hard to see and noisy areas.

A moisture meter is an essential electrical test tool that is used to detect moisture in materials. Building and home inspectors use it to identify potential damage and problems in structures from moisture build-up. Woodworking industries also use it to ensure quality products. People who work in the flooring industry use it to determine the ideal conditions when installing a new floor over a subfloor or concrete slab.
